Aim of the Course

To prepare and equip students with knowledge and skills in the practice and management of Health and Social Care programmes leading to employment or further and higher education to degree level. The Edexcel BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) are highly regarded, nationally and internationally recognised, undergraduate level programmes, equivalent to the first and second year of a university degree course. They are at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. These Health and Social Care programmes have been designed to equip individuals with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for employment in Health & Social Care, both in the UK and overseas. These qualifications meet and exceed the National minimum standard of qualification set by the Care Quality Commission for those practising in Health & Social Care in the UK.

The course is suitable for all those already working in the sector who wishes to gain practical skills and a formal NQF Level 5 qualification in order to progress to supervisor or junior management level roles.

Entry Requirements:

  • Normally a minimum of one A level (in an appropriate subject) or
  • 5 GCSEs or a BTEC National Award or GNVQ Advanced Qualification at pass level or
  • Any equivalent overseas qualification
  • Completion of High School Certificate and relevant work experience
  • Applications from mature students are welcome

English Language Requirement

Students who wish to apply for the course must need to produce Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate from a UK Boarder Agency approved provider, showing that they have achieved level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in each of the components: Speaking; listening; reading; and writing. Students will automatically meet the language requirements if they are a nation of the English-speaking country.

Course Structure

To achieve the HND qualification, students are required to complete sixteen units: six of them are Core units and ten of them are Specialist units.

Core units

All students must take the following 6 core units:
  • Research Project
  • Communicating in Health and Social Care
  • Principles of Health & Social Care Practice
  • Health & Safety in Health & Social Care
  • Personal & Professional Development in H&SC
  • Working in Partnership in H&SC

Specialist units

Students also require taking further 10 specialist units and the list of the 10 specialist units is available in our academic office.

Mode of delivery

Participation in a variety of teaching and learning methods which include interactive lectures, seminar presentations, group projects, Independent directed study, Study Skills workshops. Students are expected to participate in classes which are designed to be interactive.

Assessment

Each unit is assessed by one or more of the following methods and all assessments are externally verified by Edexcel: assignments, individual or group presentations, projects, or examinations. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit and Distinction. There is no overall grade awarded for this qualification.

Progression

BTEC HNDs are well established qualifications with a proven track record of success. They are a recognised and popular route to university leading to the final year of a bachelor degree or to a specialised bachelor degree top up, which usually lasts 1 academic year.

This course also prepares students for a wide range of careers in health and social care.

Professional Recognition

BTEC Edexcel's qualifications are nationally and internationally recognised by employers and professional organisations.

The recognition of Higher National Diploma (HND) is a way for students to prepare for jobs and careers in their chosen field through membership of relevant professional bodies. Edexcel students and graduates may be offered exemptions by professional bodies from parts of their own qualifications in relation to membership.
