English Language Course

Course Title: ESOL Skills for Life

Awarding Body: Trinity College London

Aim of the Course

ESOL Skills for Life is an English Language course aimed at students whose first language is not English. The course is specifically designed for:

  • Settled communities
  • Refugees and asylum seekers
  • Migrant workers
  • Partners and spouses of learners settled in UK
  • Overseas students do not have full command on English

ESOL Skills for Life at London Churchill College takes one year for completion, divided by two 6 months semesters aiming for two Entry Level qualification; ESOL Level 1 & ESOL Level 2. At the first 6 months of the course students will aim for the Level 1 qualification, which will conclude with a Trinity College London exam. Upon passing the exam, students will continue on the second semester for the Level 2 qualification. The benefit of the ESOL course run at London Churchill College is that even if any student wishes to quit the course after passing the first semester he/she will still acquire the TCL Level 1 certificates. Therefore the students leaving half way through the full ESOL course may still be leaving with a qualification.

Anyone with an Entry Level 3 qualification or equivalent is eligible for the course. Students are required to take a mock exam before the course to display their qualification for the Skills for Life Course.

Nature of Education

The programme will include teaching in class where students will work through reading and writing exercise, role-play, group tasks, and tests. Students' progress will rely heavily on their interaction with the teaching staff and each other. For each semester the students will have different objectives for achievement in their relevant Entry Level.

Level 1 Objectives
  • Engage in discussion with one or more people in a familiar situation, to establish shared understanding about familiar topics.
  • Speak to communicate information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics.
  • Write to communicate information with some awareness of the intended audience.
  • Read and obtain information from short documents, familiar sources, and signs and symbols.
Level 2 Objectives
  • Engage in discussion with one or more people in both familiar and new situations to consume new ideas.
  • Listen and respond to spoken language including mixed narratives, arguments, and rhetoric.
  • Express opinions and question new ideas.
  • Write to persuade the intended audience with rhetorical language.
  • Read materials to obtain the desired information and source data from text.

Assessment

Over each semester students are expected to maintain a certain standard of attendance and participation in class tasks. Once the course coordinator deems the student's level of attendance and participation to meet the required standard, the student will be allowed to register for the semester exams. Only students who pass the mid-term Level 1 exams will go through to study into the second semester for the Level 2 qualification. Students who do not pass the Level 1 exam will be required to resit the entire semester for Level 1 before they can move onto the semester for Level 2.

The Reading and Writing exams will take place on the same day, while a separate date will be designated for the Speaking & Listening test. For the Reading and Writing exams students will be taking a paper designed and issued by Trinity College London. For the Speaking & Listening exam students will attend an interview format and a discussion format exam with an examiner from Trinity College London.
